TDM 003 - SUMMER

[ SEE GAME NAVIGATION TO READ UP ON HECK GAME BEFORE PLAYING IF YOU SO DESIRE ]

A: Garden Level - OOPS YOU DIED
[CONGRATS YOU DIED. Sucks for you!! But Abe and Lucy are DETERMINED to get paperwork done and to do that, they need to get to know YOU.

So as soon as you appear, no matter if you're going to heaven or hell, you get slapped with a "HELLO MY NAME IS ____" sticker by one of the sheep. Said sticker has two possible effects:
-The sticker may say your "True" name or a nickname you don't like, or an alias, etc. How did it get there?? Paperwork. There is a chance it's blank and you can write your own name too.
-Whenever they see a person, they will be compelled to shout "HELLO MY NAME IS [their name] AND I LIKE [something they like.]"

We speed therapying this shit. ]

B: SUMMER HELL
[Whether you're a demon or an angel, eventually you may want to visit the HellRaiser hotel below! Hell is where all the HIP HAPPENING THINGS are after all. Want a lava bath? Go to a club? Gamble?? Just get fucking drunk? Hell's your place.

However, despite being the afterlife, even hell is not immune from the heat of summer. And it's taking the whole flames of hell thing literally. So!

-You might be minding your own business, and suddenly part of your body or clothing just, fucking ignites on fire. Good luck with that!
-You may get badgered by demonic vendors, trying to push various summer t-shirts on you.
-You might get roped into some demons fucking EMBRACING THE HEAT. Ever been tied to a giant fire spit oven an open flame?? YOU HAVE NOW. Maybe someone will help you, or you can handle yourself just fine.

Or you might get lucky and none of that happens and you're just vibing. Good on you!!]

C: Heaven is Central Air Conditioning
[Heaven-side, the heavenly hotel is its normal, luxurious self except for one key different. . .A/C. That's right, only the hotels in Heaven have working air conditioning. Fucked up!! So chilling up here might be the right call. You can always go visit the beach too, or any of the delightful coffee shops. Heaven also is the only place to get caffeine. Wack.

Of course, even heaven is prone to wackiness. Newbies may be prone to:
-Like hell, there are plenty of vendors up here, but instead of cash, today they ask for payment in...jokes? Better give your best one.
-Cherubs may be especially pushy and try to get you dressed in extremely stuffy/heavenly clothing. Enjoy your corsets and such.
-At the beach, if you sun bathe too long without protection, oops! You may find your skin (fur, scales, whatever) turning not red, but another ridiculous color.

OR AGAIN, JUST DO WHATEVER. WHOMST CAN STOP YOU?? You have a phone just text strangers do what you want.]

He gets the usual firm and proper Tradeliner handshake, and she nods. 'I hope so. I'm not counting on anything, because being dead would... make a lot of sense, from where I'm standing. But I wouldn't turn down a second chance, either.' She doesn't seem desperate to get home, or even particularly distressed about it. Quietly fatalistic, if anything.

'I hope the same for you too. Let probability smile.' It's Ari who smiles now. 'And I hear you. I keep feeling as if I ought to be doing something to fight the evil demons, but there's not a lot of point, is there? Except when they're being actively harmful. You- wait, you said husband?' She pronounces the word as if it's utterly foreign, which of course it is, to her. But the meaning's carrying.

'Lifetime contract?' She pats him on the shoulder. 'Brave of you.' She doesn't say what she's thinking - that death ends all contracts and they're both dead - because she knows it's more complicated than that. Her Tradeline colors are testament to that fact. Sometimes you don't want to let go, even when you're allowed to.

Klaus gives her an apologetic smile. He knows what dying is like and he's done it so many times that it's almost nothing. Not fully, but this is only a weird blip. Except that there's a very real possibility that it will end with him back on the ship once it's righted. Or maybe they can make a deal not to go back somehow. "Yeah. I think it'll be okay. Like a weird dream." Do spacers dream?

There really isn't a lot of point in fighting demons in their own domain, but Klaus is sure that they can probably do something about it all the same. But there's a pause when she brings up the husband part and smiles. "Yeah. Lifetime contract."

Klaus isn't really worrying about the 'death' part because it's never permanent. But they shrug at the comment about it being brave. "It's just one of those things. I never wanted to be married before." A beat. "Well, except once. But that...didn't end as I wished." They frown at that, too. But they won't talk for too long about Dave. It's pointless. "It's fine, though. I'm happy now."

'Hopefully not a dream,' she says with a grin, 'or any moment now someone's going to run in and tell me I have to do a surprise flight test. In a shuttle that dates back to Cardalek's founding and has all its displays in a script I don't recognise.' Yes, she's going to make light of it, because there might be better ways of dealing with being probably dead but there are far worse ones too.

She's trying not to ruminate on it too much. 'It's good,' she adds, 'that you're happy now. Things go wrong, but we keep trying to find a better course, yes?' Then she hesitates. 'I'm sorry. That you're separated now from someone you care that much about.'

Klaus would like to say he understands what she's trying to say now, but he'd be lying. He gets the gist of it. Like how everyone has nightmares about tests or showing up to class naked. He never had those nightmares because of homeschooling. Really, his nightmares weren't something he would talk about most of the time. "Why stop there? You could have realized you were also somehow naked in front of your whole class...or uh...crew?" Crew is probably more correct.

They give her a quick, lopsided smile. It doesn't reach his eyes, but he's sure it's fine. "Yeah. Me, too." Anyway. "I'm glad you came along, though. I'm not going to say that I wouldn't have been able to get out of that on my own, but it's nice to have someone else join in."

Despite everything, that makes Ari laugh. 'Naked in front of the whole crew? Test whether it's actually possible to die of shame in a dream, yes?' She tilts her head, about to make a more suggestive comment, before reminding herself quite firmly that he's in lifetime contract and might take it entirely the wrong way.

So she switches focus. 'Of course. Either one of us could handle this place entirely on our own, no trouble! Only it's better to have an ally, for all sorts of reasons. You agree? You and I could be good allies, Hargreeves.'

She barely knows him, but then she doesn't know anyone here. It's not the worst suggestion.

Klaus nods at her words. "Exactly. I'm told it's a common nightmare. But I don't like...know. I've been in a lot of questionable situations with my family. I'm not sure I'd be that embarrassed about being naked." Maybe if it was like their dad. That was about it. But that's neither here nor there. Thankfully.

They give her a quick smile. "Yeah. Probably we could. And I prefer Klaus. Living with six other siblings, if you call out Hargreeves, it gets confusing." This is not really the reason, but it's easier. Even if none of them are here. Klaus prefers their first name over being identified by their dad's last name.

Now Ari's left to wonder what would be the worst nightmare, being naked in front of her crew or her family. They're both awful thoughts. Her Carrington cousins used to give her snooty looks even without that.

Lucky for her, it's not a question that will ever demand an answer. She gives Klaus a puzzled look but refrains from asking about what possible family situations would make that less embarrassing. Maybe it's a planetary culture thing.

He can probably predict her reaction to his request: that hesitance, that pause as if he's said something not right and she needs a moment to figure it out.

'Klaus. Sure. If you want. It's very... I'm not supposed to be that informal, you know? But I can, if we're going to be allies, and you're not gonna take it like I'm talking down to you.' Which is how she would take it.

It's fine, Ari. Don't worry about it too much. They've had a lot of issues in their life. It's just one of those things that people with chaotic family history and further poor self choices.

"Well, you know..." No. She probably doesn't. "We're not in a professional setting here. We're just us." But he shakes his head about the comment about taking it like she's talking down to him. "Nah. Anyway. My dad named me Number Four, so this is really a step up for me. Klaus."

There's a quick, reflexive smile about it. "And we're totally going to be allies." A beat. "But don't worry. I'll call you Tayrey." Cause they know how she feels about it.

She's about to contradict him and say that she's supposed to be professional all the time - but he's right. She's dead. She probably doesn't have to concern herself so much with the reputation of the Tradelines among outsiders, being dead.

Hearing that he'll call her Tayrey makes her smile. It's what's comfortable, still. Even back on Cardalek she'd been little Citizen Kittredge to most people.

'Klaus,' she confirms. 'Wait... you were named number 4? Just the number?! Was that normal in your culture? Was there a reason for it?' She is trying not to jump in and declare how awful it sounds. But it does sound awful.

Klaus knows better than to expect her to act any other way than how she usually does. It's just not in the cards. Tayrey will be Tayrey even if they suggest otherwise. Kind of helps to know this about her in advance. That way she doesn't get mad at him for it.

"Yeah. Number is also part of the name. Dad only ever calls me that." He shrugs. "No. It's not a cultural thing. I think it's a...uncreative naming thing. Also a way to make us feel like...you know...shit." Well, no. It was probably more because their dad didn't want to give them names that were too close to ordinary people or something. Like make them feel less human. Also laziness? Klaus can't say for sure.

"Mom named us later on. Five's the only one that still goes by his original name. I guess he's used to it."
